A prominent obstetrician and gynaecologist, Ernst Bumm (1858-1925) held professorships at the University of Basel (where he was rector), University of Halle and University Women's Hospital in Berlin at the Charité, where he was Professor of Gynaecology from 1910. Bumm made significant contributions to the treatment of puerperal fever, eclampsia, uterine carcinoma and urinary tract disorders and developed new gynecological surgical techniques. He attributed female gonorrhea and puerperal fever to bacterial infections for the first time. Bumm also set a lower target of child mortality in Germany with particular emphasis on the living conditions of the lower classes of the population. He also promoted emerging radiation treatment of cervical cancer. |
