Surgeon Otto Zuckerkandl (1861-1921) was a specialist in diseases of the urethra, bladder, and prostate. His surgical career began in 1884 when he was appointed as assistant to surgeon in Vienna. In 1892 he became a lecturer in surgery at the Vienna General Hospital, afterwards gaining promotions as an associate professor in 1904, and full professor in 1912, the year this photograph was taken. Zuckerkandl was the brother of anatomist Emil Zuckerkandl. An unfinished portrait of his wife Amalie, painted by Gustav Klimt, is now kept at the Belvedere in Vienna. |
