Carl Max Wilhelm Wilms was a surgeon and pathologist best known for his work in radiation therapy for treatment of tuberculosis and and tumours, particularly paediatric renal tumours. He is credited with a number of surgical innovations. Wilms introduced a partial rib resection used in the treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis, and perineal prostatectomy via lateral incision. WIlms set a number of milestones in paediatric surgery and published widely on renal tumours. In 1910 he was appointed Chair of Surgery at the University of Heidelberg. He died in 1918 after operating on a French P.O.W. who had a swollen larynx associated with diphtheria. Despite saving the life of the French soldier, Wilms became infected with the disease, and died within a few days at the age of 50. |
