A former Deacon of the Incorporation of Surgeons, Professor of Midwifery, Alexander Hamilton published several important textbooks on midwifery and was instrumental in the establishment of a lying-in hospital in Edinburgh in 1793, which was partially funded from his own pocket. Hamilton co-founded the Hospital with his son James Hamilton, who succeeded his father as Professor of Anatomy.
In 1846, the Lying-In Hospital became the Edinburgh Royal Maternity Hospital.
