Description |
Charles Dickens thanks James Miller for a pamphlet on chloroform, “which I have read with great interest and satisfaction. I feel sure it will do good service and go far to eradicate those monstrous absurdities on the subject, which linger (I am ashamed to confess) in some parts of these Southern Regions”. Dickens tested chloroform on himself first and then insisted it be administered to his wife Catherine during childbirth in 1849. This was at a time when chloroform was still a controversial subject. James Miller FRCSEd was Professor of Surgery at the University of Edinburgh and became surgeon‐in‐ordinary in Scotland to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Miller lived next-door to James Young Simpson in Edinburgh and was involved in the early experiments with chloroform. James Miller autograph and letter book |
