Born in Newry, Northern Ireland, Andrew George Malcolm began his education at the Royal Academical Institution in Belfast, studying logic and rhetoric, before joining the newly opened Faculty of Medicine in 1838. He served his second year placement at Meath Hospital in Dublin from 1839-1840 before being incapacitated by typhus the following summer. Following this he studied in Scotland, including lectures in 1841 from James Syme in Orthopaedics while in Edinburgh. He was accepted as a Licentiate of the College, following examination, on July 25th 1842.
