Alexander Gillespie lived at 30 York Place in Edinburgh and enjoyed a most interesting medical and surgical career. Licentiate, Fellow, then President of this College, he was Consultant Visiting Physician of the Royal Edinburgh Lunatic Asylum, Surgeon to Gillespie’s Hospital and of Donaldson’s Hospital, a Regiment Surgeon in the West Indies. He was also Surgeon to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Edinburgh and of the Royal Agricultural Society.
His son was James Donaldson Gillespie, FRCSEd 1848, who in 1869 also became President here.
