The photographs in this section show the hospital ship Aquitania. When Gallipoli was evacuated, Henry Wade sailed with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force to Cairo, Egypt where he was admitted as a patient in the Giza military hospital suffering with malaria or dysentery. Early in 1916 he was granted a period of sick leave and returned home. After sailing on hospital ship to Naples, he boarded the Aquitania bound for Southampton. Built in Glasgow at John Brown's Shipyard, RMS Aquitania was among the large liners converted to a hospital ship and used to transport convalescent and wounded soldiers during the Dardanelle's campaign. (Wade sailed a fortnight after the sinking of the Britannic, a similar hospital ship and sister-ship of the Titanic).
The photographs show Wade with fellow convalescent officers as he passes through harbours at Malta and Alexandria. Lieutenant Munro of the Scottish Horse was also a patient who travelled on the Aquitania with Wade.
