Back to SHMB Field Ambulance Foreign Service, 1915-19

Return from Sick Leave, 1916

The photographs in this album were taken by Henry Wade on his return to war after convalescing in the UK, on a hospital ship bound for Alexandria in Egypt, 1916

Wade spent a short period of time recuperating in Scotland before returning to war. He jointed HMS Shropshire to sail for the Mediterranean before boarding the hospital ship HMS Oxfordshire, bound for Alexandria and shown in this section. In Cairo, Wade was reunited with officers from the Scottish Horse Field Ambulance who had not been sent to Salonika.

Notable in this section are views of other hospital ships in harbour, indicating the significant numbers of hospital ships required to support the medical services.
