Also known as class tickets, these cards were issued to students allowing them to gain entry to particular classes. James Hamilton was Professor of Midwifery at the University of Edinburgh from 1800 – 1839. His lasting contribution to the development of midwifery was in successfully campaigning for the subject to become mandatory for all medical students. His remarkable thirty-year career as lecturer in Midwifery at the University of Edinburgh is represented in these two class cards. One dating from November 1816 entitled ‘First course of Midwifery’ and the student is David Greig. The second is from November 1828, entitled ‘Midwifery Class, University of Edinburgh’ indicating this is the first course in midwifery for student Robert Logan.
