Description | This double-bladed obstetric Vectis was used to aid difficult deliveries by altering the position of the baby's head or easing the head out sometimes with the additional help of forceps. Single bladed Vectis were referred to as levers. The ebony handle indicates this instrument was made and used before the understanding of infection in the 1860s. Wooden handles were difficult to adequately clean, meaning that deadly infections such as puerperal fever were spread with dangerous ease. |
