Description Alexander Russell Simpson, a nephew of Sir James Young Simpson, was Professor of Midwifery at Edinburgh University from 1870 to 1905.  He designed these axis traction forceps, which have an elongated curve that conforms to the shape of the baby’s head which often elongates temporarily as it moves through the birth canal. All A.R. Simpson's forceps have 'left lower first' stamped on the inside of the handle of the left blade as a reminder.
