Description A traditional medical bag carried by general practitioners and midwives in the 20th century. From 1833 all medical graduates were required to study midwifery. This was vital as prior to 1915, 95% of births still took place in the home. Therefore, traveling obstetric kits like this were essential for home deliveries. This bag would most likely have been used by a GP when called out to assist and contains a range of material for delivery including Milne-Murray axis traction forceps, Scimmelbusch anaesthetic mask, a set of cervical dilators, uterine curette, uterine sound, a catheter, pelvimeter and catgut ligatures.
