Description These colourful foldouts are similar to the paper manikins of previous centuries and were sometimes called “fugitive leaves” or “flap anatomies”. Like wax models that simulated dissection, paper manikins were especially popular from the 19th century, but had been used by students of anatomy since the 16th century. In this example, layers of the female reproductive body are peeled away to reveal the foetus. Published in five volumes, Cassell’s People’s Physician was not a student manual per se, but a domestic ‘self-care’ guide, intended as a book of health and medicine for everybody.
