Description Letter from Irish ophthalmologic surgeon William Wilde to James Young Simpson, 14 December 1847

“must review the Chloroform in some shape or other…although the ether was not used in Midwifery here the Chloroform is coming into use in that department. I should suppose you saw the flaming account of the First Case in the last Medical Times”.

Wilde became embroiled in controversy when accused of seducing a patient while she was under chloroform. The accusation was distributed widely in a pamphlet by the patient in 1863. Although the judge dismissed the charge because it had not been reported at the time, and the patient had continued corresponding with Wilde, he suffered considerable reputational damage. Wilde was the father of Irish poet and playwright, Oscar Wilde.
