Description | These wax models were produced in Germany and were widely distributed for teaching the stages of embryo development. Here, the embryo is at 41 days post-ovulation. The first model shows the whole embryo, while the second shows the development of the face. At this point the embryo is around 11-14mm long and has paddle-shaped limbs. We can see the indents which will develop into the fingers and toes. The embryonic tail is beginning to shrink and will have disappeared by week eight. These models are magnified to nine and eleven times the actual size of the embryo. In the second model the external ear begins to form, and the eyes have already formed, and are beginning to produce pigment in the retina, but the eyelids haven’t appeared yet. |
