Description |
Chloroform drop bottle used in the administration and storage of the anaesthetic chloroform. It is a clear, colourless liquid with a pleasant odour. Following his discovery of the anaesthetic properties of chloroform in 1847, Simpson was quick to use it to relieve the pains of labour, earning the gratitude of countless women and the condemnation of some members of the church and the medical profession. Its universal acceptance came when Queen Victoria was given chloroform during the birth of Prince Leopold in 1853. Chloroform remained a popular anaesthetic in the UK until the 1930s. 19th century |
