Baby's caul

Image Details

Date 1888
Location Essex
Description On rare occasions babies are born with a piece of the amniotic sac still attached to the head - the caul. This is from the head of a female child born at Colchester, Essex in 1888. It is harmless and easily removed but they were often seen as a sign of good luck. One superstition was that a caul would protect a person from death by drowning. As a result, cauls were sometimes sold to sailors.
