Description | These forceps are very similar to the curved design devised by William Smellie. The forceps handles were wrapped in leather to remove the sound of clanging metal when in use. There was a fear and criticism of these early instruments in childbirth, muffling the sound would reduce the worry from birthing mothers and criticism from attending female midwives. However, the leather handles would have been difficult to clean, and no doubt added to high infection rates. |
