Description These forceps were designed by William Smellie in 1751. The design revolutionised the forceps by introducing the cephalic curve to better fit the child’s head and importantly the pelvic curve. They were shaped to conform to the birth canal and to help direct the force of the traction under the pubic bone. The blades lock together into notches allowing for a more secure fit.
