Description | "Great British won't give in. They say it sometimes angrily & more often joyfully. Especially [illeg], the little people like the people like the Serbs and Romanians, "you see, we know you are such a tenacious people". We have two British Tommies in from the [illeg], such nice boys, the modern sort of Tommy, you know. One has been at a public school, & was out in West Africa when the war broke out, & the other I should imagine, is a clerk or something like that. One of them has been awfully ill, but he is getting better, I am thankful to say. They were both wounded. We had a great difficulty over their food, for they hate the Russian food, & I did not want the Russians to think we gave them special delicacies. So we made a plot, & one of their officers came up and took some of our jam & carried over to the Hospital open & only wrapped up in paper at the last minute as an after-thought. Then the officer carried it speedily & ostentatiously through the ward, & said "I have brought you some jam & butter". So the man said "Thank you Sir". But it was too much for his..." |
