Description |
In September 1916, the London Unit (comprising 75 women) headed by Elsie Inglis with Evelina Haverfield's transport column left Britain for Russia. Inglis travelled from Archangel to Odessa on the Danube and onto the Romanian district of Dobrudja where she was subsequently based for eight months, at Reni near the Black Sea. In Reni she was given a barrack to form a base hospital. Conditions were appalling (exacerbated by the arrival of high numbers of casualties), in an overflowing hospital with meagre medical supplies. During this period Inglis worked closely with the Russian Red Cross, and she also opened a small outpatient's department. Despite being seriously ill herself, Elsie remained with her Serbian division to ensure its safe evacuation out of Russia after the October Revolution in 1917. Thereafter she returned to Britain and passed away in Newcastle shortly after her return in November 1917. |
