Ruth Nicholson, a Durham graduate acted as Assistant Surgeon & second-in-command at Royaumont. Along with France Ivens she dealt with the bulk of surgical work serving continuously until the hospital closed in 1919. Before the outbreak of War she worked with Elsie Inglis at the Bruntsfield Dispensary in Edinburgh. The Laboratory, under the direction of Dr Elizabeth Butler, was located on the top floor, and attracted the interest and respect of some of the most eminent scientists of the time. Gas Gangrene expert Professor Weinberg of the Pasteur Institute conducted many trials at Royaumont. |
